I hunted with my wife’s grandfather for a week and had not seen a single deer. On New Year’s Day, after the morning hunt, we were riding around and looking at the land. He pointed out several stands, but one stood out to me. It was a tripod stand in a pasture with horses. The pasture was grown up with rye grass on one side and woods on 3 sides. I hunted there that afternoon. I climbed in the stand a little after 3 p.m. I had barely gotten settled in when I looked up and saw him standing in an opening in the treeline 150 yards away. I put my crosshairs on him and waited on him to make his move. He decided he wasn’t going to come into the pasture, so I took the shot. He dropped in his tracks.
